Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a cover that is placed over a tooth to protect the damaged area and restore the tooth shape and functionality. A tooth can become damaged from complaints such as tooth wear, large fillings causing part of a tooth to break away, decay or cracking; a crown may be required to rebuild the damaged tooth back to its original structure.

Dental crowns can be made from filling materials (constructed inside the mouth), ceramic and gold (constructed outside of the mouth).  Whilst gold crowns are stronger and last longer, most patients choose ceramic crowns as they can be matched perfectly to the colour of the teeth, and look invisible.

At Martin Vale Dentistry, we believe a crown should be the last resort, preferring modern dental applications such as an inlay, or an onlay.  We work to preserve the tooth structure at all times – rather than simply covering it up.
Where is crown is required, non-invasive dentistry techniques are used where possible, preferring to build the crown externally and then adhere to the top of the tooth for protection, rather than completely cover it.  Modern bonding and adhesion techniques ensures the crown is secure and reliable.

To build your dental crown, we use CAD/CAM technology. This 3D imaging creates a computer manufactured design, restoration that reconstitutes the structure of the tooth and builds the crown outside of the patient’s mouth.  This increases patient comfort, the stability of the crown, and allows for stronger and a greater selection of suitable materials like ceramics to be used. The look of the final crown also increases aesthetically as it can be perfected outside of the patient’s mouth.
Why do teeth crack?
Tooth cracking most often occurs from tooth wear, or from older mercury fillings.
