Tooth Fillings

Preventative treatment ensures fewer fillings are required however when fillings are required we use the latest materials and technology to restore you tooth perfectly.

A filling is most often constructed and built in the patient’s mouth during an appointment in the clinic.  However, depending on the size and and complexity of the filling required, sometimes they are constructed externally and then inserted.

To ensure your fillings are identical to what is required for your individual concern and mouth, we use and advanced dental software CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) and CEREC (Chair-side Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics).

CAD/CAM uses an optical camera to create a 3D image from a virtual impression. The digital scan creates an exact match of your teeth and enables us to use CEREC to quickly print precise 3D ceramic inlays, crowns and other restorations.
Modern dentistry has moved away from drilling and filling teeth. A tooth is a living organ that is able to at times repair itself, and with increased access to proper care and treatment, less surgical intervention and less implementation of man-made substances, fillings in children are far less common or necessary.

A greater focus on prevention has also increased kid’s dental health.  In addition to learning good brushing and flossing habits, fissure seals are also an essential protectant.  These are a thin layer that are attached to some teeth and fill in the pit of the tooth that may hold bacteria. This protects the tooth from developing decay whilst good brushing habits are being formed.

White Fillings
Martin Vale Dentistry use a selection of modern dental materials including composite resin or ‘white’ fillings when replacing existing fillings or treating adults for tooth decay.

With a lifespan of approximately 7-10 years, all fillings require some maintenance throughout use, to ensure the filling remains sound. Fillings can fail for a number of reasons at the margins, where the edges of area that attaches to the tooth becomes unsecured. If left unchecked, this can result in decay underneath.

Mercury Fillings
If you have existing mercury fillings, it is also important to have them checked regularly, as whilst they have a longer lifespan, the metal substance can cause teeth to crack leading to bigger issues. If you feel anything has changed with an amalgam filling, have it checked immediately.
