Gum Disease

Healthy gums are as important as healthy teeth and need to be professionally checked regularly.

Did you know that your gums are as important as your teeth?  Gums are the foundation that hold your teeth in place, and require just as much care and attention.

Gum disease, also known as Gingivitis, is the inflammation of the gum caused by plaque build-up. The condition may then affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth. Gum disease can occur at any age and must be treated by a dentist to prevent further damage to the teeth and gums.

How well you clean your teeth is directly linked to your gum health.  Whilst gum disease is usually a genetic predisposition (ask your parents about their gum health), smoking, illness, medications, hormonal changes and poor oral health can also create gum issues.

The first sign of gum disease is bleeding gums, or spitting out blood when you brush your teeth.

Other symptoms include:
  • Red, puffy or swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums that bleed during flossing
  • Teeth that look longer because your gums have receded
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth

Leaving gum disease untreated may become a more serious and expensive periodontal issue.

When caring for your gums each day, it is important to brush your gums when you brush your teeth. Cleaning between your teeth is also essential for gum health.

Everyone should adopt a good gum health regime that includes a dentist appointment every six months to address plaque and tartar build up.  Every level of gum disease must be treated by a dentist, involving a professional clean and rinse.

If you think you may have a gum problem, book an appointment now for an assessment, and prevent future infection.

Terms and Conditions

A Free Initial Consultation at Martin Vale Dentistry is the waiving of the fee usually applied to an initial consultation appointment. During an initial consult, we assess your dental concerns, identify any risks attributed to your current dental conditions and provide advice and recommendations of what action (if any) should be taken. Where suitable we may provide photographs or additional printed information for reference. This value of an Initial Consultation is the equivalent of the standard fee for a consultative appointment, which ranges between $60 and $90.

Free Initial Consultations do not include radiographs of the teeth or associates structures. This process can be undertaken at your request, with applicable fees quoted for your approval, and payment required at the time of appointment.

Initial consultations can vary in duration depending on each patient’s needs and concerns, ranging from 15 to 45 minutes, at the discretion of our Dental team.  We are committed to answering all of your questions, and providing easy to understand, efficient and effective advice on the option available to you, and costs applicable.

The ongoing provision of Free Initial Consultations is at the discretion of Martin Vale Dentistry.
